HUNTED BY 40'S FASHION

Fall 2013 Trend

Carolina Herrera                                                                                     Oscar de la Renta

                                                    Dolce & Gabbana                                                                                         Christian Dior

As I devour this month’s latest issue of Preview magazine, womenswear designer Dax Bayani said that “Fashion is all about reinventing the classics and breathing new life into the clothes”. His assertion lead me back to the recent Fall 2013 collections given that some of the designers (from New York, Paris, and Milan) executed various silhouettes from the 40’s. Why did they carry out such thing?  Maybe because some of the 40’s elements can still be incorporated into a modern wardrobe or the answer might be on what Dax Bayani just stated: remaking what’s old.

                                           Marc Jacobs                                                                                               Lanvin

But of course it was a full-of-fun-invention the designers have accomplished just like what Raf Simons did on Christian Dior. The “New Look” or the classic Bar suit, introduced in 1947, corresponded with wide-leg pants this time around. There were also knee-length and mid-calf dresses that would bring you back on the emerging of legs in the 40’s and nipped waist suits in Oscar de la Renta and Dolce & Gabbana, the puffed shoulders in Carolina Herrera, Lanvin, and Ralph Lauren, the double-breasted fastening on coats and zipped overcoats on Miu Miu, and the feline slip dresses at Marc Jacobs.

                                           Miu Miu                                                                                                 Ralph Lauren

From here, you would realize that reinvention comes with ingenuity, imagination, and creativity of one’s mind to integrate it into contemporary clothing. That, of course, also approaches the women’s style for the upcoming season. The only point that a lady must remember is that she have many options to pick to have a dash of 40’s look into her wardrobe. And the technique to construct it into fresher look is just adding up the perfect accessories like a statement heel or chunky platform; horn rimmed glasses or if you want it to be more classy, a “cat’s eye” shape is not to be faulted.

LOUIS VUITTON PRESENTS YAYOI KUSAMA

Yayoi Kusama Signature Patterns

Can't stop admiring Yayoi and this short clip about her inspirations.

Some of her quotes:

A polka-dot has the form of the sun, which is a symbol of the energy of the whole world and our living life, and also the form of the moon, which is calm. Round, soft, colourful, senseless and unknowing. Polka-dots can't stay alone; like the communicative life of people, two or three polka-dots become movement... Polka-dots are a way to infinity.

If it were not for art, I would have killed myself a long time ago.

CAMOUFLAGE PATTERNS

Dries Van Noten Spring 2013 Menswear

Giving an athletic vibe yet the elegance was still there, Van Noten’s collection clearly showed his vision and creativity as well as his cleverness to put those camo prints from beginning to end.

EVERYTHING'S EQUAL

Prada Spring 2013 Menswear
Milan Fashion Week

If last season’s collection was all about studded and printed short-sleeved shirts, vibrant golfer shoes and printed trousers, this time around, Prada’s Spring 2013 collection was a total contradictory. But that didn’t indicate Miuccia’s amend on her artistic power. Instead, she consciously pulled through and pointed toward equality on both sexual characteristics even on the aged generation.

To point at, uniformity and similitude was the enlightening tale of her show. From color-blocking polo shirts in different color palettes like blue, grey, and burgundy, the exaggerated proportions on blazers, and few fur pieces seemed the catching feature of these unisex crowd. In connection with that, sandals from beginning to end also came into view that was just ideal on the purpose and drive of Miuccia’s inspiration.

Thus, as she insisted to reveal that “Simplicity is repetitive and equal": male and female (old and young) strutted down the runway where the atmosphere of minimalism and athleticism was established. In that case, headbands and borders around neckline, on the inside leg, and hem could involve Prada’s rule on this collection. It became her decorative elements where the people were surprised because of the plainness that she showed.

ZEGNA SILK PROJECT

Ermenegildo Zegna Spring 2013 Menswear
Milan Fashion Week

No man could ever spend his summer without considering tropical banana and mango leaves as his motif. Spotting these pattern on shirts and slim trousers on Zegna’s models, Anna Zegna, granddaughter of Ermenegildo, established a silky and fine-looking collection.

Her show was conquered by palette of mannish colors all in sapphire, wine-red, cream, and bronze. Silhouettes were sharply tailored so as to prove that jackets with bold shoulders, perforated knit polos, and high-waist pants with sewn up pleats entails that a Zegna man is nothing but sleek and classy.

As the show was set out in 30-piece collection dominated by silk fabrics sighted commonly on shirts, Anna Zegna brooded over that the textile is “The cashmere of summer”.

ABACUS-INSPIRED DESIGN

James Long Spring 2013 Menswear
London Fashion Week

On the forthcoming summer of 2013, I want my wardrobe to have James Long pieces.

CRAZY-QUILTED SHANNON

Christopher Shannon Spring 2013 Menswear
London Fashion Week

Patchwork of colors, fringes, and heart-shaped motif was the expression of Christopher Shannon for his Spring 2013 menswear collection. He was inspired from the image of James Pearson-Howes’ series “British Folk” which happened to be a propos to murky traditions that continue in U.K.

There’s a tactic he provided that I really admired. It was the impression of showing the distinctive side of men which turned out to be the stretchy collared shirts, striped jean jackets, multicolored details, and shorts with tassels that appeared eye-catching.

SKIN, SIN, AND BONES

Jerome Salaya Ang Holiday 2012
Philippine Fashion Week

Entitled Skin, Sin & Bones, he started a motion editorial where there were three sisters doing their makeup, sparks of camera became visible taken in slow motion, and thrilling and bloodcurdling shots appeared between the flashes. It was creepy and daunting thus with the intention of revealing something unsolved.

Subsequently, the ladies in leather paillettes, head bandages, with fiendish attitude in all black came out of the x-shaped runway with platforms on the side and at its end. Knowing a little manner of his show, he would always insert a twist on the music for us to be in awe. As a result, Ana Feleo, an opera singer, appeared on the catwalk and did a live vocalization while the models slowly walked and posed like a worn out dolls but clothed in a Jerome’s couture creations.

As they uncovered their guts, the gushes of their skins bared the fabrics, beadworks, and Baroque avian prints. However, these detailings were responded with asymmetrical cuts, lacing bodices on all the sides that you can think of (sides, backs, and fronts), floral cutouts elaborated on the dresses, and parading ruffles and layers on almost all of his pieces.

But to his inventive skills, it wasn't a complete dark collection after all. There was in fact a graceful touch to it getting hold of his inspiration from his father who passed away recently. It was then the radiance of Lucy Torres-Gomez -in a black serpentine gown accompanied by Philippe Escalambre and Ram Sagad in black togas – who conveyed that there’s a conclusion in every battle that we experience and it ends before long in a delighted and contented way.

So for that reason, Jerome did not just succeed in transcending our continued existence. He also made sure that we realize we still have the chance to rekindle our days at this time because at the end of the day, our life here is indeed momentary.

REPRISAL OF A WOMAN'S SOUL

Happy Andrada Holiday 2012
Philippine Fashion Week

It was a spine-chilling show when I watched Happy Andrada’s Holiday 2012 collection. She was inspired by incorporeal beings and unworldly atmosphere that totally surprised me when they strolled down the runway giving the impression of wandering souls that gone astray in our world.

She instantly set the entire audience into a creepy ambiance with the aim of enlightening us that these vanished souls are trying to link with the realm of the existing to reconcile their unfinished life. They were all sporting a white hair appearing in missionary disarray and dressed in a flawlessly white wedding gown in fantasy tulle. What made Happy’s collection that stunned me more was the skull - held by her models - became their bouquet as to convey that they’re searching in lieu of their abandoned love.

Furthermore, souls of these beautiful women continued to drift clothed in floating tulle, dip-dyed black pieces, sheer lace, appliqués, and interweaved cotton and organza.

With a collection like Happy Andrada’s, I wouldn’t mind haunted by these picturesque souls even encountering their mystifying dimension.

BARONG FOR WOMEN

Veejay Floresca Holiday 2012
Philippine Fashion Week

Modern version of softhearted Filipina has come into our lives. She will definitely conquer your imagination and taste as she wears, so they say, national-costume-for-men-garment known as barong tagalong.

It was indeed a witty and a trendy idea of Veejay Floresca as he presented it on his Holiday 2012 collection. You can clearly notice that his pieces convey that a woman should empower bravery and guts as they guard that there’s still the spirit of nationality on what they’re wearing resembling to former President Ramon Magsaysay who popularized the barong as a formal wear. Likewise, he didn’t lack imagination as the short-sleeved leather shirt, one-shouldered sequined dress and skirt, tailored shorts, and sheer details came up to the runway.

Although there was a Filipino inspired garments, Veejay took us to the international scene as he hurled jackets and wool trenches that are created for traveling. Even I would want to be dressed in that piece gorgeously. In addition to his collection, there were also thigh-high slit evening dresses and sheer dresses granting his show the exact feature of manliness and womanliness.

For his finale, there was a lineup of sheer black gowns manifestly highlighting the leather cutout elements that appeared geometrically yet elegant over a nude dress that lies beneath it. At that moment, you couldn’t do anything but to gaze at those pieces and suffer through admiration.

DELICATE BEADING

Philipp Tampus Holiday 2012
Philippine Fashion Week

Philipp Tampus’ show, to my surprise, gave me a shuddering feeling of wonderment on his collection. I was not expecting the pedantic beadwork on the sheer fabrics and delicate lace; the velvety quality on suits and Victorian-esque niceties on men’s shoes.

DENIM AND LACE

Chris Jasler Holiday 2012
Philippine Fashion Week

Last season, Chris Jasler simply transformed jackets into jeans. On his latest collection for Holiday 2012, he took us to the most extreme and lust-worthy.

As the gorgeous male model walked down the runway - boasting a denim bag around his body wearing only a leather boy shorts - and stood up there for about awhile, I knew at that moment that something tremendous will happen again. He unzipped his bag, carried out a black sleeveless top, wore it, then the denim bag turns into a pair of studded and zipper detailed jeans that fit very well and looks perefectly striking to him.

I think that just proves that no one could open a show as marvelously as Chris.

The collection revolves around festooned skulls, one-sleeved jackets, studded and buckled vests, and even a long-sleeved lace dress mixed with denim details worn by Philippe Escalambre. If truth be told, I really fancy those masks and spiky heel-less shoes worn by both male and female models. It appeared genuinely good on them, mind you.

Another favorable trait of his collection was it didn’t classify sex. He made both of the genders show masculinity and femininity at the same time without strictly losing their true individuality. That, my dear, is what you call cleverness on high-fashion.

Furthermore, all that you’re gonna think about on that moment was to grab every single of Jasler’s pieces and think if you’re suave enough to pull it off around the streets. Yes, it looks nasty. But after all, there’s nothing wrong to put on a silly attitude at times.

DELIGHTFUL FUNERAL

Eric Delos Santos Holiday 2012
Philippine Fashion Week

Believe it or not, Eric Delos Santos’ inspiration for his Holiday 2012 collection was a funeral. Surprised huh? But as unpredicted, it ain’t a depressing funeral. Eric preferred to focus on the brighter side as Marina Benipayo - dressed in a blazing red gown with a deep plunging neckline and a wonderful fur jacket - opened the show and danced on the cheerful beat of the music. It was thoroughly refreshing as we were also enthused by the song and his garments such as chiffon, leather, and lace.

BLACK AND WHITE KISSES

Avel Bacudio Holiday 2012
Philippine Fashion Week

After the Oxygen presented their collection, I went straight to the show of Avel Bacudio and other local designers like Chris Diaz, Eric Delos Santos, and Raoul Ramirez. Bacudio’s collection were entirely black and white with studs and metal armors which were featured on arms, knees, and shoulders giving the impression of custom-made knights in a faultless battle.

SOMETHING WILD AND PRIMITIVE

Ezra Santos Holiday 2012
Philippine Fashion Week

Dubai-based designer Ezra Santos presented a spectacular, worthy of prolonged applause, and standing ovation for his collection. He could even made the audience tremble on their seats because every structure of his pieces -the sharp beading, the lacy details on men, and the festooned tulle and organzas – can truly magnetize the attention and the fascination of any audience. The white bodysuit with the embellished swarovski crystals and an enclosed jacket worn by Joan Bitagcol started the ball rolling.
Ezra Santos was inspired by the impressive architecture on Dubai as well as its uncultivated and unregulated desert. He was also drawn on the fact that a sandstorm is taking place on such a highly developed city. All of these ideas showed on the color palette that he used akin to silky pink, beige, peach, and orange. You could really imagine that you are part of the Carrie Bradshaw gang in Sex and The City 2 having a splendid and deluxe retreat in Abu Dhabi.
